The School Helper

Build a helper robot that understands, acts - and behaves fairly.

Step 1 of 3

What you'll learn in this level

  • How technology and the question of what is right hang together
  • Why a working system isn't yet a good one
  • What transparency means day to day

Your Final Project

Your school would like a small helper robot for the entrance hall: it should answer questions and take visitors to the right room.

Five steps, five real decisions. This time it isn't only about whether it works - it's also about whether it's fair, safe and honest.

How it works

  1. Clarify the task

What should the helper be able to do? And what must it never do?

  2. Decide on data

Which information does it really need in order to help?

  3. Build in limits

What does it do when it doesn't know something or isn't allowed to?

  4. Make it checkable

People have to be able to understand why it answered that way.

Guess first, then experiment

Your finished school helper understands children much worse than adults. Why is that?

What you need from three modules

  • Talking with AI: understanding questions and answering well.
  • Robotics: using sensors and acting safely.
  • AI Ethics: fairness, privacy and transparency.
